Amongst the many themes related to dealing with the current environmental/climate challenges, are eco-design and carbon footprint. Another one is modular nuclear power plants. In such emerging areas are effective results, quality and safety largely relying on regulations and international standards as well as assessment of compliance with these.
Within the IEC, there is now much focus on such areas, on the making of standards and also on conformity assessment services. Regarding the latter, amongst IEC’s four conformity assessment systems (IECEE, IECEx, IECQandIECRe), the IECQ has been assigned the role to deal with services related to sustainability (“green approach”). The third article below includes some information about these services, while the fourth article below announces a new service offered by Nemko for manufacturers and others faced with eco-design challenges.
After several months of waiting since the formal adoption, the European Commission has now finally published the Eco-design Regulation (EU) 2023/1670 and the Energy Label Regulation (EU) 2023/1669. So, mobile phones, cordless phones and tablets are thereby covered by theErPDirective, which then totally covers32 product types.
The Chinese Ministry for Information Technology (MIIT) has announced that from 15 October this year, all new applications for type approval of radio transmitting equipment (theSRRC) must comply with the new Regulation No.129 “Notice on Strengthening & Standardizing the Radio Management of 2400 MHz, 5100 MHz, and 5800 MHz bands” which was published in October 2021 with a two-year transitional period.
- Revised list of products needing compulsory CCC certification/mark The authority CNCA has by a Notice (No.36-2023) published a revised version of the "Compulsory Product Certification Catalog Description and Definition Table (Rev.2023)", which includes a total of 96 types of products in 16 categories. It replaces the version issued in 2020 and excludes 9 catalogs as already announced by Notice No.34 in November 2022.
The IEC Quality Assessment System for Electronic Components (IECQ) was established already in 1980, basically as an international certification system for quality of electrical components and assemblies (transistors, capacitors, PCBs etc), to provide confidence in the supply chain processes. Over the years, the system has been extended to cover other needs in industry, also outside the pure electrotechnical area, e.g. avionics and nuclear energy.

The office and laboratories of Nemko China in Shenzhen, South China have now moved and started operation in another location. The new place is only about 2 km from the previous location and still close to the high-tech area. The new facilities have much more space, offer an improved working environment for both the personnel as well as visitors, and allow for further business expansion.
To increase the knowledge of designers and manufacturers of electrical/electronic products who are preparing to ensure compliance of their products with regulatory eco-design requirements, Nemko has launched a service namedProduct sustainability corner. The service entails a series of free self-assessment modules, and new ones are launched monthly.
