Christmas is approaching. During the first part of November, the editor was at the annual IEC General Meeting in San Francisco, and there also observed erection of a big Christmas tree at the city center square. Here in Europe people tend to wait a bit longer with the Christmas decorations, but when now entering December, it is all around here too. So, winter has come and soon another new year, which perhaps will prove to a better one regarding the geopolitical situation, virus risks etc, which, amongst many other issues, also affect our electro technical industry regarding availability of components, stability of trade chains and production capacity.
But, this November issue of our News in Brief covers rather the following topics:
New option for certification of EMC in South Africa
In South Africa, the national standards body SABS has announced that from 1 November, manufacturers of non-telecommunication electronic and electrical equipment can now apply for a SABS electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) Certificate of Compliance(CoC) by using any laboratory worldwide which is accredited by an accreditation body being a member the International Laboratories Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC).
The deadline for use of the UKCA mark will again been extended. This means that businesses can continue to use the CE-marking for e.g. electrical/electronic products on the Great Britain market for another two years.
Recognizing the CB scheme for national certification
In Saudi Arabia, the national standards body SASO has since 2018 been an ‘R-NCB’ (Recognizing National Certification Body) within the international IECEE/CB Scheme, and for many types of electrical/electronic products issue so called ‘IECEE Recognition Certificates’ on the basis of the international CB Test Certificates/Reports from Issuing NCBs
Likewise in Kenya, a part of their national standards body KEBS has now become ‘R-NCB’ (Recognizing National Certification Body) within the international IECEE/CB Scheme.
This year’sIECGeneral Meeting took place in San Francisco 31 October-4 November, hosted by the American National Standards Institute ANSI, which is the US’ National Committee of the IEC.
This big annual IEC event has not been arranged physically since Shanghai in 2019 (which was the biggest such event ever with nearly 4000 people attending, the majority participating in meetings of the many standardization TCs (Technical Committees) that China takes a part in).
Testing and certification of toysFrom the smallest plastic building block to a model railway – the safety of children's toys is a top priority for parents and others concerned. The European Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC) applies to products that are designed or intended for use in play by children under 14 years of age. The Directive lays down safety criteria, such as mechanical properties, chemical properties, flammability and more.
