Globalization was during the past 40-50 years experienced as the natural development and logical solution for
successful world trade and prosperity and for securing peace between countries/regions. At the same time, however, the globalization has resulted in shifts in the distribution of wealth and strength which cause challenges, but also new opportunities. During recent years, the trend seems to shift more towards regionalization regarding both trade,
politics and leadership.

One increasingly important example is Africa, where a recently published concept paper outlines the setting-up of an African continental framework for technical regulations, which is reported in the first article below.

Planning of pan-African framework for technical regulations 

Africa’s current population of about 1.3 bill is shared between 55 nations with populations varying between Nigeria’s 220 mill and Seychelles’ 100,000 .
In 2013, the Pan African Quality Infrastructure (PAQI) was established with the objective to ensure satisfactory quality and safety of products, services, protection of the environment and health as well as improved trade performance within the African region.

More countries with standards for WiFi 6E  

 Wi-Fi 6E is considered the next step in the Wi-Fi evolution and is claimed to represent a huge enhancement by opening new, exclusive channels never before available for unlicensed Wi-Fi use. 

WiFi 6E works with frequency band ranging from 5.925 GHz to 7.125 GHz, allowing up to 1,200 MHz of additional spectrum.

Changing US requirements for battery chargers 

In USA, the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE) has, together with the Department of Energy (DOE), recently released a notice of proposed rulemaking regarding energy conservation standards for battery chargers. 

The Energy Policy & Conservation Act (EPCA) outlines the energy conservation standards for a variety of consumer products and also for some commercial and industrial equipment. The products covered include battery chargers.

Changing EU requirements for standby-mode  

The first EU ErP product regulation (EC) No.1275/2008 (Off, Standby, Network Standby requirement for electrical and electronic household and office equipment) published in 2008 is now being replaced by a new version (EU) 2023/826, published on 8 May this year, which shall be in force from 9 May 2025.
