Nemko News in Brief April 2024

Dear Reader 

The resource recognized by the UN as the cornerstone for economic development, is electricity, which the IEC is all about. Related to UN’s 17 SDGs, the IEC did in 2022 establish the Global Impact Fund to provide grants for projects that address specific global environmental, governance and societal challenges through the application of international standards and conformity assessment systems. The overall objective is to find solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing the world, with an initial focus on SMEs in developing countries.
Funding is provided through the IEC as part of a 2023-2025 pilot phase. Further contributions are solicited from additional funders, both private and public. Projects are selected to receive financial support in accordance with specific rules and procedures.

The first project has now been selected as described in the second article below.

Scope extension of the Chinese compulsory CCC scheme

The Chinese authority SAMR (State Administration for Market Regulation) has in an Announcement No. 9-2024, published on 7 April, announced the addition of new product types to the scope of the compulsory CCC certification scheme. Products in the CCC scope must obtain certificate and carry the CCC mark before being marketed in China.

Rehabilitation of lithium batteries for solar-based electricity in Africa 

Supported by IEC’s Global Impact Fund (GIF), the Norwegian company Differ Community Power (DCP), has been selected to determine the feasibility of using second life lithium batteries to rehabilitate solar photovoltaic (PV) installations at critical locations such as schools, health centers and hospitals in Kenya, East Africa.

1. Mandatory certification postponed for some products

The Telecommunication Engineering Centre Department of Telecommunications (TEC) under the Indian Ministry of Communications & IT has announced that the mandatory scheme for testing and certification of telecom equipment (MTCTE) has been postponed from 1 April to 1 August this year for 10 types of products under Phase III and IV.

2. Standard Mark becomes mandatory for some types of electrical equipment

 The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the Indian Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MCI) has announced that the following types of equipment are added to the scope of the BIS Scheme-1 for use of the mandatory Standard Mark (ISI):

 - Electrical Appliances for Kitchen: Toasters, grills, roasters and similar appliances; 
- Electrical Appliances for Kitchen: range hoods; 

- Electrical Appliances for Skin and Hair care.

Several new agreements concluded in Korea

In line with its ambition to expand the services portfolio, Nemko Korea has during Q1 this year, been active entering into agreements with several partners:

- In January, an MoU was signed with ICR

- In February, an MoU was signed with KATRI (Korea Apparel Testing & Research Institute)

-In March, an MoU was signed with Dt&C
