Hope you are having a good start of this new Roman year, which we must trust will be a good one, despite much uncertainty many places, not least due to climatic changes. One contributing element to the environmental conditions affecting the climate is plastics. Parts of electrical and electronic products is a major source of plastic waste. Plastics produce both direct and indirect carbon emissions as the waste resists degradation and accumulates in the environment. This increasing global problem and the challenges and some possibilities to deal with this, are described in the third article below.
This issue initially includes also some ‘breaking news’which probably may affect many of our readers.
- Indonesia restricts recognition of test reports for telecom equipment
The Indonesian Directorate General of Resources and Equipment for Post & Information Technology(SDPPI) did on 2 January announce the expiration of their Decree No.109/2024, with effect already from 31 December 2024.
- European cyber security standard ‘harmonized’
The European standard series EN 18031 (Common security requirements for radio equipment), as published in August last year to support the European Radio Equipment Directive (RED), has now (on 30 January 2025) become listed in EU’s Official Journal as'Harmonized’with some restrictions.
The US Energy Star program with new specifications for computers
Energy Star is a voluntary energy-efficiency program in the USA, administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE). The EPA establishes energy efficiency specifications and those that meet these specifications are eligible to display the ENERGY STAR logo
Extended timeline in India concerning some test reports for telecom equipment
About one year ago, some types of equipment under theMTCTEscheme in India for Mandatory Testing and Certification of Telecom Equipment were granted a 3 months extension until 31 March last year as the last date for accepting test reports from laboratories in countries sharing border with India, provided that the laboratories are accredited by signatories of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC).
To make plastic waste from electrical/electronic products reusable
Electricity powers almost every aspect of our lives, at home, at work, and play. And everywhere there is electricity, there are plastics. Plastics are seen to make progress possible, making electrical goods safer, lighter, more attractive, quieter, more environmentally friendly, and more durable.
Updates on regulations for telecom equipment in Bangladesh
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has recently announced the following updates:
Circular regarding the use of 5925-6425 MHz frequency band on a shared basis. The inclusion of the 5925-6425 MHz frequency range of the 6 GHz band in the National Frequency Allocation Policy for shared use in cellular mobile networks (including Wi-Fi/IoT/Wireless LAN), has been approved by the Commission. However, before allocating spectrum, importing, and using radio equipment for commercial services in the said band, prior approval of the Commission must be obtained.
Prepared for the new European cyber security requirements?
Manufacturers and others affected may not be familiar with the European cybersecurity requirements becoming mandatory this year from 1 August, and/or familiar with the new standard EN 18031. So how can one get up to a level to decide to which extent one’s products will meet these new requirements? To have cyber security experts performing a gap analysis of a representative product can be a good start.
One will then get a report of the products’ relevant features versus the standard EN 18031 and description of (any) non-conformities.
