Dear Reader, Although global consensus seems to be that the climate changes we experience are mostly man-made, it is still debated by some. In any case, the ongoing fight against climate changes largely entails electrification, i.e. in the sense of shifting from fossil fuels as power source to use of electrical power. Electrification is clearly driving the need for electrical systems and equipment of different kinds. For the business of testing and certifying electrical products, this development can certainly have a significant im-pact. The fourth article below looks at some of the implications of this.
In Africa, out of the total population of about 1.5 billion, there are presently about 600 million internet users, i.e. about 50%, which is an incredible increase from about 30% in 2020. There is, however, significant variations in penetration rates across countries, driven by mobile connectivity and infrastructure improvements.
Plan to simplify the EU regulations for medical devices
Within Europe, the regulatory framework for medical equipment is currently the Medical Devices Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2017/745) which aims “to ensure the safety and performance of medical devices while supporting innovation and maintaining a high level of protection for health”. This means that medical devices must undergo conformity assessment to show that they meet legal requirements before the CE marking (Conformité Européenne) can be placed on the device and it can be legally marketed. For certain high-risk devices, third party certification by an authorized Notified Body is required.
The governance landscape for artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly. Regulations such as the European Un-ion's Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) signal a clear shift toward outcome-oriented oversight, emphasizing trustworthy AI that respects fundamental rights as AI systems increasingly affect people's lives, opportunities, and freedoms. Following the United Nations High Commissioner's report on human rights and technical standard-setting processes, organizations developing or deploying AI are now expected to demonstrate not only technical robustness and regula-tory compliance, but also that their systems operate in ways that are fair, transparent, and respectful of rights in real-world contexts.
Climate change driving electrification and associated needs
As the world struggles with rising global temperatures, more frequent climate-driven extreme weather, and accelerat-ing emissions, electrification has become a central strategy in the global response to climate change. From electric vehicles (EVs) and industrial electrification to renewable power generation and resilient grids, policy- makers and industry leaders increasingly view electrification as essential for cutting emissions and adapting to a warming planet. As a result, the global electricity demand is significantly increasing and so is the need for electrical systems and equipment.
